Rehabilitation of disturbed areas: bringing life back to the land

publicado: 10/12/2025

Prodeco continues to make progress in fulfilling its environmental obligations by restoring ecosystems in the previous mining areas of La Jagua de Ibirico and Calenturitas. In total, 37.1 new hectares were rehabilitated in 2024 (11.5 hectares in La Jagua and 25.6 hectares in Calenturitas), and 202.5 previously restored hectares were maintained (145 hectares in La Jagua and 57.5 hectares in Calenturitas). During 2025, restoration and maintenance processes have continued, with the first plantings carried out to rehabilitate new hectares and maintenance activities conducted on more than 250 hectares.

These areas were physically stabilized to ensure structural stability and landslides, and to prevent soil erosion and sedimentation in nearby water bodies. There was also a revitalization process to restore ecological life to the land through the planting of more than 78,500 native trees (38,910 in La Jagua and 39,629 in Calenturitas) a key step in the restoration of the tropical dry forest, one of the region’s most important and threatened ecosystems.

Thanks to the progressive recovery of soil biological quality and vegetation cover, the rehabilitated areas within the mines have become habitats for a growing variety of plant and animal species. This progress reflects how responsible environmental management and long-term commitment can transform former mining zones into vibrant, biodiverse landscapes that contribute to the ecological balance of the Cesar department.
