Grupo Prodeco, first company in Colombia to sign a multi-year purchase of carbon
certificates to mitigate climate change
21|04|2018
On April 21, with the presence of Juan Manuel Santos, President of Colombia and the United States Ambassador to Colombia, Kevin Whitaker, Grupo Prodeco signed the first agreement of direct multi-year purchase of carbon certificates that takes place in the country.
The agreement is between Prodeco and 20 ethno-territorial communities from the Pacific region of Colombia, represented by the NGO Fondo Acción, through the REDD + project; a global initiative to offset carbon emissions funded by the United States Agency for International Development - USAID and supported by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development.
For Prodeco, the department of Cesar is very important, which is the reason we are implementing a comprehensive sustainability strategy in territory that includes social, environmental and human rights programs focused on sustainable development and territorial peace. Now, through this agreement, Prodeco seeks to offset its carbon emissions and contribute directly to the Colombian government's climate change mitigation strategy, and to the competitiveness of Cesar’s coal in the world.
With the purchase of REDD+ Pacific certificates, Grupo Prodeco supports the conservation of 700,000 hectares of natural forests and the peace process in the Colombian Pacific region; thus ratifying our commitment with proper mining and improving the quality of life of vulnerable communities.
